Making Reading Aloud an Event

A book itself is an opportunity.

A book read aloud is an event.

A book read aloud gets the words off the page and creates a shared experience, shared language, shared culture. It introduces ideas, words, places, situations you can draw from later on. Reading aloud can create closeness.

And a book read aloud is a performance. I’m here to help you share your expressive self reading aloud.

Everyone is innately expressive. When we talk about about our day, we use what tools we have–often our voice, face, body–to express ourselves. But when we have to read aloud, we often read with much less expression, almost as if the goal was to read neutrally. Writing is rarely neutral–it wants us to care, to feel curious, awed, indignant, moved, inspired, and any number of emotions. And to communicate emotion, we have to read with expression.

As a narrator, it’s my job and my joy to connect to the meaning of what I’m reading, both intellectually and emotionally. I’ve had to learn how to access that myself, and I want to share it with you. My workshops connect your already expressive self to how you read text, and to talk about practical aspects to help reading aloud feel more feasible, enjoyable, and repeatable.
